Accelerated ageing test to evaluate vigour in Jatropha curcas L. seeds Rev. Ciênc. Agron.
Oliveira,Glauter Lima; Dias,Luiz Antônio dos Santos; Dias,Denise Cunha Fernandes dos Santos; Soares,Marcos Morais; Silva,Laércio Junio da.
There is currently great interest in the cultivation of the Jatropha curcas L., known locally as physic nut, for the production of biodiesel, leading to an increase in the demand for seeds and precise information as to their physiological quality, especially vigour. The objective was to evaluate the efficiency of the accelerated ageing test, with variations, in verifying the vigour of Jatropha seeds. Four seed lots were initially characterized as to their physiological quality by germination and vigour tests. For accelerated ageing test, temperatures of 42 and 45 ºC were tested during 48, 72 and 96 hours. The experiment was carried out in a completely randomized design and the averages of the treatments compared by Tukey test (p<0,05). The Pearson...

Silva,Clíssia Barboza da; Barbosa,Rafael Marani; Vieira,Roberval Daiton.
ABSTRACT: This study aimed to determine the most appropriate method to assess the sunn hemp ( Crotalaria juncea L.) seed vigor in the accelerated aging test. Five seed lots from harvest 2007/2008 were evaluated for germination, vigor and seedling emergence in the field. Accelerated aging test was performed at 41°C during 48, 72 and 96 hours, with and without sodium chloride saturated solution. Then, the promising procedure was also performed for 2008/2009 and 2009/2010 harvests. In the traditional accelerated aging test, the no-uniform water acquisition by the seeds adversely affected results. Accelerated aging test with sodium chloride saturated solution is the most appropriate method to evaluate the physiological potential of sunn hemp seeds, and the...

Accelerated aging to assess parsley seed vigor Horticultura Brasileira
Tunes,Lilian M de; Pedroso,Daniele C; Gadotti,Gizele Ingrid; Muniz,Marlove Fátima B; Barros,Antonio Carlos SA; Villela,Francisco A.
There are many gaps for the assessment of seed vigor in vegetable crops, among these the parsley. In this context, the accelerated aging test is recognized as one of the most widely used to evaluate seed physiological potential of various crop species, being able to provide information with a high degree of consistency. Thus, the objective of the present study was to evaluate the methodology of accelerated aging test to check parsley seed vigor, as well as verify the possibility of using NaCl solutions as an alternative to control seed water uptake during the aging period without reducing test sensitivity. Four lots of parsley seeds were tested for germination, seedling emergence, and accelerated aging for 48, 72 and 96 h (traditional and NaCl solutions)....

Adaptability and leaf anatomical features in oil palm seedlings produced by embryo rescue and pre-germinated seeds Braz. J. Plant Physiol.
Luis,Zanderluce G.; Bezerra,Kadja Milena G.; Scherwinski-Pereira,Jonny Everson.
Changes in the leaf structure of plants grown in different conditions have been reported, such as increase in size and density of stomata and reduction in stomatal control, amount of epicuticular wax, and mesophyll thickness, with a high diversity of intercellular spaces. However, these changes are highly variable depending on the physiological and morphological characteristics of each species. The objective of this work was to analyze the adaptability and anatomical plasticity of oil palm seedlings produced after embryo rescue and pre-germinated seeds. Expanded leaves were prepared for evaluation of morphometric data and anatomical structures. It was verified that the environmental conditions in vitro negatively influenced the stomata density, epidermal...

Allelopathic potential of bark and leaves of Esenbeckia leiocarpa Engl. (Rutaceae) Acta Botanica
Souza,Flaviana Maluf; Gandolfi,Sergius; Perez,Sonia Cristina Juliano Gualtieri de Andrade; Rodrigues,Ricardo Ribeiro.
We investigated the inhibitory potential of aqueous extracts of bark and leaves of Esenbeckia leiocarpa Engl. on lettuce germination and early seedling growth. We compared the effects of four concentrations (100, 75, 50 and 25%) of each extract to water and polyethylene glycol (PEG 6000) solution controls for four replicates of 50 seeds for germination and four replicates of ten seedlings for seedling growth. The inhibitory effects of E. leiocarpa extracts on the percentage of germination and on the germination speed seemed to be more than simply an osmotic effect, except for the percentage of seeds germinated in bark extracts. When compared to water control, both bark and leaf extracts delayed germination, and leaf extracts also affected the percentage of...
